The Shining + Redrum Gin Martini

Stanley Kubrick changed a fundamental element in Jack Torrance’s personality for his screen adaption of The Shining : the man’s preferred drink. Bourbon on the rocks is a solid go-to drink, however, in Stephen King’s mind Torrance was a martini guy. In both renditions Torrance gave up drinking. For those who love a stiff cocktail, The Shining illuminates the dangers of quitting a beloved past-time.

Indeed, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

Redrum Gin Martini Recipe

  • 3 oz Gin
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • Dash of orange bitters
  • 1/4 lemon, squeezed
  • Red food coloring* for the ice cube

  1. Combine red food coloring with water and pour into ice tray. Freeze.
  2. Combine gin, vermouth, bitters, lemon, and ice. Stir or shake to infuse flavors together.
  3. Strain over red ice cube.
  4. Look out for Johnny!

*Use liquid food coloring as the gel variety will cause the color to fall to the bottom.
